City of Shelton Open Space Marker

open space marker

This marker is used to identify Public Open Space owned by the City of Shelton.  It does not mark the exact location of the property line and may be as much as 100 feet away from the boundary, depending on site conditions.  The Conservation and Pedestrian Easements markers have a similar look but different text.

Land Trust Marker

The Land Trust is a private, non-profit group that owns 364 acres of open space in Shelton, marked with these signs.  People frequently confuse the Land Trust with the City of Shelton.

Wetlands Marker

These rectangular wetlands marker may be found in some newer subdivisions, usually on 4x4 posts. They mark the location of areas regulated by the Shelton Inland Wetlands Commission. These are generally on private property and are not related to open space.

OS 27 Nells Rock Road Parcels, including:
OS 27.04 "Abbey Wright"; 27.05 and 27.14 "Spooner"; 27.08 & 27.09 powerlines; 27.10 and 27.11 Old Kings Highway/Dominick;  27.12 English Lane; and 27.15 "Pagliaro."

Nells Rock Trail and Dominick Trail both cross these properties, which are also home to "Indian Caves".   A major parking lot is located on Nells Rock Road across from L'Hermitage Condominiums.

The Shelton Lakes Greenway Trail Map and other information can be viewed on the sheltontrails.org website.

The first City property in this area was the Abbey Wright parcel  where the parking lot and caves are located. This property was originally intended to be used as a landfill, but advancing environmental regulations in the 1970's halted these plans.  For a time there was a parking area and benches on the site, but vandalism and problems with partying caused the parking area to be gated off by a chain link fence.  The property went unused until 1995, when the Nells Rock hiking trail was built and eventually linked to the 10-mile Shelton Lakes Greenway trail system.

This bobcat was seen off of English Lane (OS 27.12) in 2009 and may be the same bobcat that was seen repeatedly off of nearby Falmouth Drive in 2007-2008.
